Have you ever played at Seve's? If you want a challenge, you want lots of water hazards and undulating greens, this is for you! Having played here previously a further day out was just what was called for.
Welcome to The Shire London, only 13 years old, but you'd never tell.
This Seve designed course, the only UK course designed by the Maestro is lovely to play. It's often described as 'quirky' and has something for every golfer which means whatever handicap you have, it can be great fun. Six par three's, six par four's and 6 par five's. With water on twelve of those 18 holes so bring spare balls if you are wayward!
At over 7000 yards off the back tees some of the par three's over water can make club selection paramount. If there is any wind hurting, even more so. (3 of the Par three's are over 200 yards off the back tees). Unless you're a long straight hitter you may also struggle to make Par 5's in two.
The greens were in great condition (due to a little rain two nights previous) and ran true. With more rain due and a cut and iron they'd also have even greater pace on them.
Now... You want undulation on the green... you have it!
Seve certainly had a sense of humour when he designed this course! Many of the greens involve your golf ball taking a Roller Coaster ride to get to the hole... but that's just one of the great things about this course. Playing it several times would be a must to understand the best place to pitch your ball on the green. As Arnie said, I'll be back.
The final hole requires a long drive to set up a risk and reward opportunity to reach the green in 2. Anything too short with the drive will leave a very long shot to the pin. Come up short or go long and you find the aqua!
You can you tell it's Seve designed though! Just take a look at how many holes have a couple of bunkers and a very tight gap to access the green. If you don't carry the bunkers you will struggle for par. The second hole is a perfect example of this. Seve was a magician at the short game, visualising and you can see how his eye was drawn to threading balls through gaps between bunkers.
In the midst of the Covid Pandemic the Clubhouse was not open meaning you could not experience the amenities. Great measures were put in place though and registration was seamless which added to your experience. A very tasty halfway house Burger was also most welcome and when the Clubhouse is reopened you can experience the hospitality once more.
Thanks for the game Mark it was a pleasure!
